I have heard others say how uncomfortable they were with themselves during the teenage years, then looking back realized that they had it all. I don't remember thinking I was good-looking. I just remember worrying about my hair, my freckles, the small scar on my face from an auto accident, yada yada. And the only dress I remember purchasing was for my Junior Prom. Maybe there were more, but my mother was a talented seamstress with limited means, so I think she made most of them.
I also found this picture of the method I used for getting my naturally curly hair to lay as smooth and controlled as possible. It took FOREVER to dry because the cans had no ventilation and the hair was long. But if I took the cans out too soon, I'd frizz for sure. My dad used to tease me about getting radio signals from across the country.
This is me and my oldest son. I must have been about 22 years old. I actually remember this outfit. Notice the smooth hair.
Maybe in a few days I'll post pictures of some of the fabulous outfits I had for various occasions. In high school, I was often in plays, operettas, traveling assemblies, and other activities that required special clothing. I have realized that I did not adequately appreciate my mother's talent.
Just tell me if I get too carried away and annoying with this reminiscence. I'm having lots of fun remembering.

this is fun to see-can't believe the tin cans for uncurling your hair. I always had to get perms and still do to have any curls. You need to organize your photos and some comments and made a life history for your kids and grandkids.
You can go on and on reminiscing. It is wonderful to hear! I love the photo's! You look adorable!
I think it's kinda interesting to have a mishmosh of photo's. It's fun to see what's next. I once tried to put everything in order and then decided to just put pictures in an album as I came across them. It's such fun to look at. Maybe when I am sitting around in my old age with nothing to do I can then organize to my heart's content.
Keep sharing! This is fun!
Post away Jo! I'd love to see them all!
So very true about not realizing all we were and had at the time. I thought I was "big" 80 pound ago. Crazy.
It's great fun looking at old photographs, whether they're your own or someone else's. I've always had the straightest of straight hair, and used to go to all sorts of extraordinary lengths to try to get a bit of a bend in it - though I don't think I've got any photographs of me with loads of little curlers in!
Omi GADS!!! I totally forgot about curling (or UNcurling as the case most certainly was) my hair around orange juice cans. That picture is hilarious. I'd say "What were we thinking?"... but, they did work. While my head was weighted down with empty Minute Maid containers... my sister was sporting a hundred and fifty "spoolies" trying to get her straight hair to curl. And my brother was in my mom's crisco trying to get his "duck tail" to stay put. What a riot.
I think you look so dang cute with your little boy. Ahhh youth!
Oh these are great piccies, and wow look at those humungous rollers!! It's always entertaining looking at old pictures.
OK I just realised they're not rollers they are open ended cans!! Utterly bizarre LOL
Isn't it true, unfortunately, that we looked way, way better than we thought we did as teenagers! I was no beauty queen, for sure, but I now realize I had some strengths I was completely blind to. As a high school teacher, it used to break my heart to see my teenaged students so down on themselves.
But I loved your post and can't wait to see more photos of your trip down memory lane. Life passes by so quickly.
Not at all! I enjoy a good trip down memory lane! Can't wait to see more! Your picture reminded me of the juice cans I used to use for curlers! Thanks!
I love looking at old pictures. My aunt used to do the same thing with cans, I think hers were orange juice cans because she had both ends cut off. I'll be waiting to see more pics.
Whoa... that really looks quite painful. I guess you didn't sleep with that, right?
I'm looking forward to the photos of all your clothes.
Just a note: They were pop/soda (depending on what part of the country you're from) cans--mostly Shasta, because it was the cheapest. I don't remember how we got off both the tops and bottoms of the cans. I need to ask my mother.
And yes, I did occasionally try to sleep in them.
Thank you for your encouragement for my memory stroll. I appreciate it.
I used to roll my hair in orange juice cans!! How funny looking back at that!!Reminisce all you want. It's fun sharing!
