Hoping for Heroes

I find myself hoping that there are real life heroes like there are in some of my favorite novels. When politicians dither and argue and play games intended to build their positions of power rather than work to protect their constituents or the county, I really want to believe heroes quietly do what needs to be done. I want there to be rugged, decent, smart people like Dirk Pitt, Mitch Rapp, or Jack Reacher. I like my heroes determined to do the right thing, even it it is dangerous. If movies or television is your medium, I want Jack Bauer or John McClane on my side.

I'm sure others can think of their own fictional heroes to add. I'd enjoy finding some more. I just hope there are real ones just like them.

I have a tendency to look for heros close to home. My dad worked through some of the hardest financial times this country has seen and managed to provide for his family, build a thriving business and leave his wife in good monetary condition when he passed away. He was smart, thrifty while remaining generous, willing to take a leap into the dark on the chance that it would lead him into financial success... and it did.

My husband... who also worked as many hours and as many jobs as it took to provide well for us and to save for a secure future. He's superman in my eyes. I've watched him carry his daughter out of a crevice when she ran her snowmobile into it, and then go back to pick up that 1600 lb snowmobile and lift it out of the crevice unaided.

I've watched him stand between his children and eminent danger unblinking. I have no fear of the future as long as he's standing beside me.

Fortunately, there are many personal heroes in our lives for which we should be extremely grateful.

I was thinking more about those trying to protect us all, but your testament to your husband was very lovely. Read it to him for Valentine's Day.

Nice post,Jo. It makes you think. My thoughts immediately turned in the same direction as Caryn --close to home. Ditto what Caryn said about daddy and spouse, only the stories are slightly different.

Volunteer fire people and middle school teachers are two groups of my heroes!!

Sadly I'm feeling a little cynical about heroes. I'm hearing too much about "heroes" who have fallen off their pedestals.
